Spencer sighed as she looked out over the edge of the Northern Tower. She loved being up here looking out at castle grounds under the starlight. This was probably her favorite spot in Hogwarts, not just because of the wonderful location and view, but because of all the memories it held. And now she was going to spoil it all with this. Spencer bit her lip and fiddled her fingers as she prepared herself for what was coming: she was going to break up with James Potter. Call her crazy, but it had to be done. It was the only logically conclusion no matter how Spence looked at it. And hey, all the other girls couldn't complain because now it meant that James was on the market again. Spencer sighed at that thought, she didn't like the idea of James off with other girls but she had to be okay with that now that they weren't going to be dating. Now if only he would hurry up so she could get this over with. See this was just a little reason why they shouldn't even be dating in the first place; He was always a mess and running late, while she found comfort in getting to places actually on time. At least it gave her more time to prepare for any possible situation that was about to happen. All she had to do was get to the point and get this all over with. Spence wouldn't be surprised if he thought she'd call him up here to have sex... Well, tough luck, because it was over. Spencer Boot had officially decided she was done with this and it was best for her to move on from this relationship. And well, when Spencer decided something that was it, no turning back. "Finally," Spencer huffed, as she heard foot steps coming up the stairs. She shook her head, turning around to see him and crossing her arms. And all of the sudden all the nerves and worries came to her. "H-hi, James." she practically whispered, taking a few steps away from the stair case so he wouldn't get to close to her. |

James could barely contain his excitement. They'd only been back at Hogwarts for a few days and everything was absolutely crazy. It was a non-stop party for James and his Gryffindor friends. As soon as they were off the train they were raucously catching up and drinking and joking, and it was simply so much fun that it was difficult to focus on anything like classes. He was surprised that he even went to all his classes (less so that he doesn't remember what happened in any of them). Despite this, everything was just going well for him. Quidditch was going marvelously, he was in his seventh year, the shock of his best friend dating his cousin had started to wear off- pure bliss. Even things with Spencer seemed to be going alright. There was no shortage of owls during the summer. He was rather perplexed that they hadn't gotten to see each other more over the holiday. His summer had mostly been spent at training clinics with different Quidditch teams. His parents were slowly but surely warming up to the idea of his playing for a professional team; he was even starting to think it was possible. However, it didn't leave much time for his girlfriend. He wrote when he could. When he did, he always tried to tell her that he couldn't wait to see her, but mostly his letters were filled with news about his clinics and family. He asked his fair share of questions about her and always threw in a lovely compliment or two, but James...never one for words. He assumed the unsaid was understood. Not being able to see her but for a few spare moments after the feast and between classes, he was positively elated at the invitation to meet on North Tower that evening. North Tower was (as it was to many other couples too) their special spot. It was a quiet place away from their common rooms, their dorms, the other nooks in the castle, and it allowed them to bask in the glory of the stars and a majority of the castle itself. The views were impeccable. But it wasn't North Tower itself that James was looking forward to. He couldn't wait to wrap his arms around Spencer, feel her again. He'd found over the past year (was it really a year?!) that he genuinely enjoyed being around her just to be around her. That was new. Usually, the enjoy-ability of girls was ranked with their fit-ness and their expertise in bed. Spencer was easily one of the most beautiful girls in Hogwarts and he was far from unsatisfied with their sex life, but that didn't matter as much as his pure longing to just take a minute and be with her. And he promised himself to make an effort to tell her that tonight (another reason he was so antsy). He moved toward her, grinning, so quickly he didn't even notice her quiet voice or the way she shrank away. As she was slightly shorter, he stooped slightly, wrapping his arms under her torso and arms, pressing his head close to her collarbone. He exhaled and stayed there a moment, before rising to his full height, looking down at her from where he stood, their hip bones nearly connected. Tugging her tight around the waist toward him further, he moved to kiss her, whispering as he did "I couldn't wait to see you." |

Spencer froze in her spot as soon as James wrapped his arms around her. She glances away from him trying not to breath in his smell and nuzzles her head on top of his. It would be to easy to respond to his touches, to wrap her arms around him and entangle their bodies together as close as possible. It would also be easy to try and mask her unhappiness and just continue with this relationship but Spencer knew they were leading no where fast. It was only in both of their best interests that they split up, but clearly James couldn't see that yet. It all started over holiday break. James was busy right away with Quidditch and that held his attention for most, if not all, of the summer months. And it wasn't completely his fault, Spencer found herself busy as well. For the first half she was able to get by with getting little baby-sitting jobs here and there. But eventually she got a small job helping out at Ollivander's. It was rather slow pace and quiet and Spencer loved everything about it. It was a stark difference of her social lifestyle back at Hogwarts and nothing like what James wanted to do with his life. It was clear that James Potter was the next big star of Quidditch star, and Spencer knew that she probably couldn't handle anything like that. Don't get her wrong, James was a great boyfriend and she did care for him, but... It just couldn't last. She was already loosing interest. Spencer noticed it back when all they had time for was sending owls to each other. She did her best to keep in contact with James but she wasn't overly excited to hear from him. She found herself making excuses not to see him, when free time did present itself. But now... she just had to say that all to James. By now he was leaning in close to her, their lips barely touching... "I.. I can't say the same."She whispered back before finally mustered up the strength to step back, out of his grasp. Spencer looked up at the sky, not wanting to face James and the look of betrayal that was probably plastered all over his face. There was an awkward silence that fell between them before Spencer wrapped her arms around herself and took in a deep breath. "James... I think we need to take a break." she said very seriously and slowly so she didn't stumble on her words. |

He had already shut his eyes and was about to seal his lips against hers. But her eyes were open and her lips started to move. James moved away, noticing for the first time the hesitation that seemed to be separating his girlfriend from himself. It was perplexing, to say the least. Before he could even open his mouth, to say anything at all, she had freed herself of his grasp, which had gone limp, his arms falling to his sides. He couldn't even remember what she had said, her body language was too distracting. It wasn't at all how he pictured the moment to be. It wasn't right. "Hey," he started, his half smile perking up in confused denial. "Spence, what-" He stopped when she began to speak, and all feeling rushed out of his body. He wasn't quite sure if his feet were on the ground or if his arms were against his sides. A slew of emotions slammed against his brain and bounced to his heart, and all respiratory function had failed. Should he be taking a deep breath or exhaling a sigh of...what? He shut his eyes and twitched his head to either side, cocking it in the way he did whenever something didn't quite compute. He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. What was there to say? Was she really...she couldn't... He refused to believe it was happening. No warning. No nothing. It was a long silence. An uncomfortable one. He wanted to scream. He wanted to cry. He wanted to turn around and storm out of the tower. He wanted to grab her by the waist and kiss her with all his might, as if that might prove how beautiful he thought she was or how much fun he thought they had together. "A break," he finally muttered, opening his eyes and looking at her with no discernible emotion, a mixture of fright and sadness and anger and loss. Enough time had passed, and the shock itself had worn off a little bit (not that it meant that he was in any way accepting what had apparently just happened). "What the hell are you talking about?" he said, taking a small step towards her and lifting his hand so that two of his fingers grazed at her elbow. The look that had developed in his eyes could only be compared to that of a child who was just told that no, they would not be going to Disneyland, or that of a puppy who was just left on the side of the road by their previous owner. |

Spencer watched as James struggled to speak. She could see the wheels turning in his head as he tried to put all the bits of information together. It didn't take very long for him to put two and two together and figure out why she actually called him up the the towers. Even though he figured it out rather quick Spencer knew it wasn't going to make things any easier. Still, there was no turning back. James would probably try whatever he could think of to make her change her mind, but Spencer was determined to not let that happen. A break. She nodded her head in silence. His voice sounded so defeated. It wasn't something Spencer was used to. Let's face it, James was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. With his famous parents, knack for Quidditch, and charming looks, James was the golden boy no matter where he went. So this new, confused and hurt James Potter was something she wasn't expecting. Spencer winced back when James finally broke the silence. "What the hell do you think I'm talking about?" she snapped back, shrugging away from his touch. She took a deep breath, glancing down at the ground- unable to stand the pathetic look that was now so prominent on his face. She closed her eyes tight as she tried to figure out what to say next without getting too emotional. "I've been thinking about it, James.. for a while now..." Damn it. Spence could feel her eyes starting to burn as if she wanted to cry, making her blink to hold them back. "Like I said, I think its in our best interests if we took a break. You know, stop dating..." There. If it wasn't obvious to him now then that was his fault. "Now, if you don't mind, I have to get going." Spencer said, before she pushed passed her now ex-boyfriend and headed toward the stairs. She had said what needed to be said, so there was no point in waiting around. |

Every few seconds he was able to think a little more, but then he had to convince himself, again, that this was all really happening. It wasn't, was it? It couldn't be happening. His emotions really were bouncing all over the place, and he couldn't settle on one long enough to get a word out. He was stunned by the way she responded to him, by her cutting tone and especially by her recoiling from his touch. He drew his hand back sharply, taking in a deep breath and looking at her from the side of his eyes, drawing back a little bit himself. It was a crazy nightmare that he'd woken up in, right? He was just having a drunk dream, right? For a while now... It was the straw that broke the camel's back. He settled on angry. Drawing himself up, he exhaled sharply out of his nostrils, balling up his left fist at his side. "A while?" he started, clenching his teeth. "A WHILE?" He regretted shouting at her, but it was preposterous. Why did she decide to wait until now, when they were back at school, to tell him? You know, stop dating... He didn't need to hear it, and he didn't want to. It was fucking happening. Spencer was breaking up with him. And all the questions just sailed out of his mind, save for one. Why? Why was she breaking up with him? She pushed past him (he barely heard what she'd said). Turning, an expression of anger still plastered over his features, he watched her head towards the stairs. He flexed his hand open, trying to find a calm in the rage and frustration that was still adrenalizing through his body. "No," he said firmly, loudly enough so he knew she would hear him. Taking a deep breath and flexing his hand again, he walked with purpose towards her, quickening his steps so that he could block the entrance to the stairs. "Why." He said it with such defiance, such strength. It was miserably unfair of her to break up with him and skip off as if it was a fucking walk in the park. She owed him more than that, and he was sure that she knew it too. "Why!" he said more tersely, a fire burning in his eyes as he resisted the urge to grab her by the shoulders and shake the answer out of her. Both feet planted solidly on the group in front of her, he could feel tears welling up in his eyes that were ready to spill over at any moment, which surely were noticeable in the sheen from the moon. |

James was never the best person to keep his emotions in check. He was just like an open book as he stood in front of her, lost and confused. For as long as she's known James, Spencer had never seen him look so upset and it hurt even more knowing that she was the cause of it all. If only he could step back a little and see this situation from her point of view. Of course, it was completely impossible for James Potter to think about anyone except himself. Hadn't he seen the signs? She had been distant from him so long. Had he not noticed? For Spencer, this was a long time coming. She had noticed how okay she was with not seeing him for long periods of time, or even hearing from him. It was only after she got back from break that she noticed how bad things actually were. Right away he went off to party with his friends in Gryffindor, leaving her alone to wonder why she even worried about not missing him during these last few months in the first place. And it wasn't like Spencer was expecting much, the last thing she wanted was to be that annoying couple eating each others faces off... But there was no way she could continue to feel so alone while at the same time she claimed to be in a relationship. By now tears were burning their way down Spencer's face as James finally decided how he was going to react to everything: with rage. He looked like a bull as he balled his fists at his side and his voice broke the silence. She always heard the stories and jokes about how James Potter had a problem keeping his fists in check, but it never really worried her until this very moment. He wouldn't hurt her... would he? No, he wouldn't dare. Before Spencer could make her escape James voice pierced through the cold air like a dagger. No. No what? This is what she wanted and she wasn't going to be altered. Spencer lifted her chin up high to bring back some of the confidence that her tears had completely washed away. In the mean time, James had continued his tantrum and was now demanding an explanation, something Spencer didn't feel like he deserved. Plus, she didn't want to give him any leverage to try and change her mind. "James, try to form full sentences please. I-it's hard to tell what you're talk-talking about." Spencer said, her voice cracking as she cried. The wind snipped by them, giving Spencer chills and forcing her to wrap her arms around her body. She took in a deep breath of the frosty air and let it out slowly before regaining her composer. It took her awhile before she was able come up with a response for James that he'd best understand. "I told you. I didn't miss you. James, I'm not going to continue this relationship if its built on emotions that aren't even there." She explain with a stern voice. |
