As cliché as it sounded, being back at Hogwarts was absolutely magical. When she graduated seven years ago, Leah had more or less figured it would be the last time she set foot in the castle. She had been lucky enough to get an internship at the Department of Magical Law Enforcement almost immediately after graduation, but after about a year there, she had decided to quit to focus on furthering her education. Up until that point, she couldn't have imagined taking a leave from the wizarding world, but since she also didn't want to leave England, her options had been sorely limited. That had led her to the University of Roehampton, where she had spent three years studying psychology and counselling.
Although she enjoyed her time back in the muggle world, she had eventually (perhaps unsurprisingly) found herself missing magic, so after finishing her undergraduate degree, she had applied for a position at the Department of Magical Education. Then suddenly, last year, Hogwarts' former Defense Against the Dark Arts professor had retired. That had always been Leah's best subject, and she knew she wanted to teach, so she had applied. Impressed by both her academic achievements and her glowing reviews from the Ministry, the headmaster had offered her the job. Leah, naturally, had been ecstatic.
So here she was, at the end of her first week as a Hogwarts professor. It seemed completely insane. The week had been hectic, of course, but also thankfully devoid of accidents. Well, at least until this afternoon, when a fourth year's half-broken wand had backfired while practicing Expelliarmus. The spell had caused the student to fly backwards and hit his head on a desk. The injury hadn't looked particularly serious, but since it was only her first week, Leah had decided to cancel the rest of the class (to be fair, that was only about ten minutes anyway) and take the student to the Hospital Wing. Fortunately, he had suffered only a very mild concussion, but Leah still felt fairly awful about it.
On the bright side, the visit to the Hospital Wing had given her a chance to talk to Julie for a few minutes, and Leah had promised to come back after the end of Julie's shift so they could finally catch up. The two had met on the train forever ago, and even though they hadn't seen each other all that often during the years Leah spent in the muggle world, they had managed to stay friends. Thank goodness for summer holidays. With a smile on her face, Leah knocked on the door to Julie's quarters, and as soon as the door was opened, she let out a dramatic sigh. "Oh my god, Jules, do you have chocolate?" She grinned for a second, then added, "Or alcohol? This teaching stuff is really hard. I think I need both, actually."
